At the point of writing this guide, there are 124 playable heroes in Dota 2. No two heroes in the game have the same playstyle or build.
I can understand how hard it is for a new player to choose a hero during the picking phase. To make it easy for you guys, I bring you this guide on the 7 best Dota 2 heroes for beginners.
These are completely beginner-friendly heroes that I suggest you learn first. Once you finish with this guide, you will have at least one suitable hero for every role in Dota 2.
Before heading into the guide, make sure to check out the U7BUY store and buy Dota 2 accounts with hundreds of hours and ranked mode unlocked for the best price.
Viper

Let us start off the list with one of the easiest, yet highly effective, heroes, Viper. Viper is a ranged agility hero that is suitable for both mid-lane and off-lane. The abilities of Viper are very easy to use and understand.
Viper can dominate right from the laning phase, thanks to his first skill with a 0 cooldown. This hero also has a great AOE ability, a passive that will increase his magic resistance and an amazing ultimate that will completely cripple the enemy.
Pro Tips for Viper:
- Learn how to orb-walk, and you will become a master with Viper. Orb-walking in Dota is the process of moving and then canceling movement animation by using an orb attack on the enemy repeatedly. Using this technique will not cause the creeps to attack you, no matter how many times you attack the enemy hero.
- Did you know Viper can change its primary attribute from agility to universal through the skill tree at level 25? It’s a great way to increase your overall effectiveness.
Razor

Another ranged Dota 2 hero who is effective in both mid-lane and off-lane and is also fairly durable. Razor is a ranged agility hero; however, he also has good strength and intelligence stats. His abilities are pretty straightforward to use.
Razor can really be a pain to lane against; his quick AOE damage attack helps him last hit and harass the enemies easily. He can steal the enemy hero’s attack damage and use it for himself; he has a great passive ability that increases his movement speed and an amazing ultimate that shreds through enemies’ armor and does physical damage.
Pro Tips for Razor:
- You can use the Plasma Field while moving. Using this ability will not stop your movement, unlike all of the other abilities in this game. You can use this to last hit, chase down enemies and deal AOE damage in general.
- His ultimate Eye of the Storm will also hit towers. Buying a refresher orb and summoning an extra Eye of the Storm will help you easily destroy enemies’ towers and barracks.
I’m sure these Dota 2 heroes will help you climb through the ranks much faster. But, if you are stuck in an unfair rank that you do not deserve and are having a hard time gaining MMR and climbing through the ladder, I highly suggest you check out the Dota 2 Boosting service from U7BUY for the best prices. Now, let’s get back to our list!
Disruptor

Next up on the list is Disruptor. He is a ranged intelligence hero with one of the best abilities in the entire game. He can play the role of a supporter.
Disruptor is equipped with a good magic damage ability, a great ability called Glimpse that will teleport the enemy back, and a good AOE crowd-controlling ability that goes hand-in-hand with his massive AOE damaging ultimate.
Pro Tips for Disruptor:
- During the laning phase, if you see any enemy hero that just teleported to their tower, use Glimpse on them to send them back to their fountain and since their TP scroll will naturally be on a cooldown, they will be forced to walk all the way to the lane.
- Use your Kinetic Field and Static Storm in combination with your teammate’s abilities. A few good abilities that make for great combos with you are Engima’s Blackhole, Magnus’ Reverse Polarity, Warlock’s Fatal Bonds and Chaotic Offering, and so many others.
Dazzle

Dazzle is a ranged universal hero and is known to be one of the best hard supports in the entire game, thanks to his skill set.
This Dota 2 hero is equipped with great abilities that will slow down the enemies, a great healing ability with a low cooldown, an amazing spell that will stop you or your allies from dying and a great ultimate that will increase/decrease armor.
Pro Tips for Dazzle:
- Use Shallow Grave only when you or your ally is about to die; using it too early will be a waste of this ability.
- During the laning phase, you can use Shadow Wave to heal your creeps and deny a last hit on the enemy, potentially damaging enemy heroes close to those creeps. Keep in mind that you must not use it to steal the last hits from your carry.
Tidehunter

For the initiator role, we have one of my all-time favorites, Tidehunter. He is a strength hero who is very durable and also a great disabler. His abilities are super simple and easy to use, even for a beginner.
Tidehunter’s abilities allow him to slow down the enemies while also reducing their armor, deal physical damage in a small area around him, dispel negative debuffs, block damage and finally, an amazing ultimate that can stun all enemies around him in a huge AOE.
Pro Tips for Tidehunter:
- With an early Ring of Protection, Tidehunter becomes really durable right from the early game, thanks to his Kraken Shell ability.
- Another really effective item on Tidehunter is a Blink Dagger, which allows you to initiate team fights or escape when needed easily.
Chaos Knight

Chaos Knight is a strength hero and is known for his naturally high movement speed and random damage output. He can play the role of a hard carry.
Chaos Knight is equipped with a great single target stun, an ability that will pull you and the enemies to a point, a percentage-based critical hit and lifesteal and finally an amazing ultimate that lets him create multiple images of himself that deal 100% of the damage.
Pro Tips for Chaos Knight:
- Armlet of Mordiggian is a must-item for Chaos Knight. Make sure to activate it before creating images of yourself, either with your Ultimate or Manta Style. This will increase the health of your images.
- Since your images deal 100% of the damage, you can quickly destroy enemy towers and barracks, making you a great pusher.
Wraith King

Finally, we have Wraith King, one of the most loved beginner Dota 2 heroes. Are you someone who is having a hard time staying alive? This hero is for you! Wraith King can scale well throughout the game and can fulfill the role of a carry.
Wraith King is equipped with a single target sun, great abilities that will give him a passive life steal and critical strike and an ultimate that lets him respawn and prove his worth one more time.
Pro Tips for Wraith King:
- Wraith King needs mana to respawn, so make sure to keep enough mana and use it wisely. Buying an Aghanim’s Shard will remove the mana cost.
- Once you have enough damage, you can solo Roshan, thanks to your lifesteal and critical damage. Make sure to take the Aegis for yourself. This will give you one more respawn, forcing the enemies to kill you multiple times.
Did you find a Dota 2 hero for yourself? I hope so! Also, read the Dota 2 Beginners Guide, made especially for new players, to learn more about the game and quickly get better at it.
